What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is severe pain in the buttock and leg caused by pressure on nerves in the lower back that may also bring on symptoms such as weakness, tingling and numbness. The pain is usually constant and originates in the lower spine and radiates down the sciatica nerve which runs along the buttocks and back of the leg and is often worse when sitting. Sciatica typically affects one side of the body and along with making sitting uncomfortable, may also result in limited movement and difficulty standing or walking.
Sciatica is a common condition that affects many adults above the age of twenty, with teenagers and children rarely affected. It’s often brought on by slipped discs and pinched nerves, which is why it’s widely associated with incorrect training form in the gym that results in injuries. But sciatica doesn’t only affect athletes and sportspeople, as narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis), herniated disks during pregnancy, disk degeneration and some forms of arthritis may also cause sciatica.
Chiropractic therapy can be extremely effective at relieving the pain and treating the causes of the condition, and there are several different techniques that chiropractors use to treat sciatica. The techniques your practitioner uses may include spinal flexion or decompression to align the spine and correct the sciatic nerve impingement to lessen the pain. Hot and cold therapy may also be employed as a treatment technique, and your practitioner may also recommend stretches for you to do at home, such as:
- Sitting spinal stretch
- Standing calf stretch
- Reclining pigeon pose
- Supine piriformis stretch
